Lance – man

After several posts featuring Ivy, I thought I’d give Lance his share of the limelight.

This photo really captures the boyhood in Lance right now – going at life full steam ahead with no reserves, no regrets and half the time with no clothes (too bad he doesn’t meet potty training head on). I am encouraged to report that he signed “potty” to me last night on his own thought – though it was more of an after thought – but I was excited for any step in the right direction.

As a Cahill he is already learning the value of money, though for now it’s more of a play thing -  handful of change keeps him entertained for an hour! He also puts great value on food, the making and especially the eating of it.

Like a man, Lance enjoys his food (if he decides the food is eatable – this time it was mac & cheese and therefore approved). He has also picked up a funny trait; if he only gets one of something yummy, he’ll eat it very slowly, nibble by nibble. It can take him five minutes to eat a goldfish cracker. But if there’s plenty then he gobbles them all down like a growing kid.

Time with Daddy is always fun, and often educational. Here they review a networking diagram and during reading time he’s learning that penguins are “Linux”.

I left the kids with Brian this morning and he took the opportunity to instruct Lance in the skills of manhood.

And so my little boy is growing up.

“Train up a child in the way he should go, and in the end he will not depart from it”

Handprints

To accompany the poem I wrote for Brian and Lance about footprints, I did one on handprints for Ivy and I.

My little hands are growing fast

Their awkward groping soon will clasp;

Daddy’s finger, Mommy’s hand

Word of God, then wedding band.

God’s handiwork in me is proved

He takes my hands and makes them move.

He strengthens me to do what’s right;

To serve Him with my heart and might.

Mommy’s hands are teaching me

I’m imitating all I see;

Cleaning, cooking, play with brother

Helping dad and serving others.

My hand prints now, though small and sweet

Soon leave their mark on all I meet.

Mom’s hands, through mine, can take or give

Through what she does and how she lives.

Thanks to Brian who did the photo shoot and Stacie for her suggestions as I wrote the poem.

Swimming

Aunt Katie came to visit and we took Ivy for her first swim last week.

After a long, pleasant swim, Ivy enjoyed playing by the poolside.

Our family knows how to make the best of a hot summer day!

Keeping up with the Joneses

The kids and I got to spend the whole week with my family last week. What a great time to catch up and see old friends and enjoy being a part of that life again.

Several days were spent helping my sister, Lori, get her new house ready to move in. Katie, Lance and I painted doors.

Lance sampled some paint – just checking!

More fun on the jobsite included playing in the sprinkler and in an afternoon rain shower!

But all that work wears you out! Ivy and Lance napped in a closet despite nail guns, hammers and people talking.

For our evening entertainment we enjoyed two skits and two plays put on by homeschoolers. These intimidating guards are from the play “Hiding Place.” My brother, David, and sister, Stacie, are on the right. There was a very moving scene where Stacie, a Nazi guard, is shot for becoming a Christian.

Lance enjoyed the farm and started to imitate the cat’s meow and the rooster’s crow. He also did a convincing impression of the chop saw at the job site much to my brother’s amusement.

And for a little country fun we had to check out the mud slide. Since we had to haul water to make it slick we only slid on the lower half, about 20 feet. Lance liked the slide part but was rather unimpressed with the mud :-)

Another evening was spent playing with the cousins at Michael and Lindsey’s house. Looking at the kids around the table and Ivy playing on the floor I thought to myself, “this could be my household in a few years!”

The weekend held several fun events. Brian drove down to join us. We watched a knife presentation by my brother, David, who has recently started selling CUTCO knives. My friend Emily got married – which means half of the bridesmaids at my wedding have joined me in the married ranks. Sunday morning we had a brunch with Lori and Jonathan at their new house. We attended Bekah’s baby shower and finally made it home to unpack and go swimming! What a great week!

“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is when brethren dwell together in unity.”
